True United Church and its leadership are committed to winning souls to Christ through preaching and teaching the Gospel message. Our mission is to empower the Believer to lead others to Christ. We are committed to inspire in all a love for Christ and to demonstrate His Spirit through worship, witnessing, and ministering to the needs of the congregation, community and the world.
True United Church was founded by the late Elder Frederick Garbutt. This fellowship began with a prayer group in the home of Deacon and Evangelist Crawford. In spite of the complaints from neighbors and police intrusion, the eight faithful members kept on. Several months later in December 1984, True United moved to its first location at 5701 North 13th Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
In November 1987, the Lord called Elder Garbutt to his final place of rest. The Church encountered its first major dilemma, the question was asked, “who will be the next Pastor?” The dreamer was gone but the dream needed to live on. With this purpose in mind, and the request of the members, young Minister Shawn Bartley accepted the call to lead the people of God. Minister Bartley was later installed as Pastor to this congregation by the presiding prelate of the United Churches of Jesus Christ; Bishop Monroe R. Saunders, Sr.
In 1992 True United became incorporated under the Pennsylvania State, as a church and non-profit religious organization. Thus moving us from a fellowship to an established institution. In March 1997, True United acquired 528 East Haines Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania until March 2011 when we acquired and moved into 6201 Old York Road, Philadelphia, PA. Anointed, structured and focused, True United continues to grow.
Since its establishment, True United Church has impacted the community and the tri-state area with many community outreach programs such as:
An Annual Back-to-School program which has touched many families and assisted them with school supplies, book bags, clothes, shoes, food and many necessary amenities.
Our annual outreach drive and community awareness programs create an avenue for the community to meet and hear from many dignitaries such as representatives from Harrisburg, the City of Philadelphia, the Police and Fire Department, Colleges, Health Officials who provided the community with free blood pressure and diabetes screening.
Our missions and outreach department visit and minister to those who are in nursing homes, shelters, prisons and through this venue have given them hope and many families have reached Christ.
True United donates, barrels of food, money, clothing, household items, school supplies which are shipped to those who had been stricken by national disasters, such as hurricanes, around the country and overseas.
During Thanksgiving, True United remembers those less fortunate than themselves and established a feeding program to cater to the hungry on an annual basis providing turkeys, hams and food baskets to the community and members of the church; during Thanksgiving, they believe in impacting others and created a platform for the needy to come and select donated clothes where they are fed spiritually with a short service designed to uplift and give them hope.
True United has been recognized in various neighborhood newspapers for their visibility in the community and for their interest in mankind.
True United has had the honor of hosting a few of Christendom giants, such as Bishop Noel Jones, Dr. Todd Hall, Bishop John Francis, Sister Beverly Crawford, Sister Kim Burrell and six months before his death Dr. Myles Munroe.
In August 2014 we opened the True United Learning Center caring and teaching children from ages 1 ½ to 5. We also have an after and before school program that pickups and drops off children to and from school and also aide them with their homework.
Our banquet facility has been utilized my many people from the community, organizations and businesses to promote their events. Our chapel, sanctuary and banquet facility continues to be used my many for weddings, funerals, church services and other commemorative events.
